Our 2015 European Adventure

We had breakfast at the hotel which included fresh squeezed orange juice, an egg cooker where you could make your own soft or hard boiled eggs, pastries, fruit and of course, café crème.

We toured numerous tasting options, met a nice guy at La Cave des Saints-Peres, scheduled a 2:30 p.m. private tasting and noticed he had a 2005 Chambolle-Musigny. We then stopped in at La P’tite Cave and met Stephanie who had no 2005 burgundies but told us to check out Mon Millesime for older vintages and mention she had sent us. We found them two doors from our hotel and they had several 2005 whites and reds.

After purchasing a 2005 Puligny-Montrachet and a 2005 Premier Cru Nuits St Georges we spotted the clothes store between the wine store and our hotel. Lynn found the cutest white and blue romper and I had to get the “Marine” bag to carry it.

Now it was time to see the Hospices de Beaune. We did the guided audio tour and saw unbelievable artwork and ingenuity and generosity of the founder. And Lynn even listened to all twenty-four stations. Then we walked the walls of the city, got kicked out of a sidewalk café for only ordering wine (no food, weren’t hungry).

At a local gift shop Lynn found our traditional artwork animal, a wooden snail (Eddie Escargot). Then we grabbed a croissant before our 2:30 p.m. tasting. We tasted an Aligote and a Burgundy Chardonnay then three reds (a Rully, one St Romain and one St Denis). We were also advised to keep our 2005 wine until our 20th or later anniversary. We’ll see if we wait that long or not. Plus we got a dinner recommendation (and it was also the owner’s birthday so we toasted his good fortune).

After another rest at the hotel and a stop at the hotel bar for an Armagnac and glass of aligote, we (eventually) found our dinner destination (Bistro Bourgogne). After arriving at 6:15 p.m. and discovering they didn’t serve dinner until 7:30, we were seated next to a grand piano and ordered a couple of glasses of wine. We sang “Love the World Away”, “In My Life” and “A Little Help from my Friends” to nice applause. For dinner Lynn had the beauf carpaccio (“excellent”) while I had the veal with moutard and cassis and excellent vegetables (Lynn even stole my zucchini). We also had a dozen escargot, a bottle or Rully route, two glasses of Haut Beaune Blanc (Lynn) and a glass of premier cru Givry (me).

On the way back to our hotel we stopped at the local watering hole for a Courvoisier and a Bailey’s. Then for the sleep of the righteous.
